T-Birds overcome pesky Kootenay Ice to sweep BCMMHL series in Nelson
The Kootenay Ice were happy to be home after spending the past few weeks on the road in the BC Hockey Major Midget League.
However, home cooking wasn’t enough to put the Ice over the top as Fraser Valley Thunderbirds squeaked out a pair of wins 5-2 Saturday and 3-1 Sunday.
Five different players hit the scoresheet in the opener for Fraser Valley as the visitors grabbed the first game of the two-game set Saturday.
Jonathan Stein, Jake Mulder, Justin Hargrave, Jamie Housch and Jonathan Rees scored for the T-Birds.
Shawn Campbell of Castlegar and Cranbrook’s Terrell Clarricoates replied for the Ice, trailing 4-2 after 40 minutes.
Sunday, Fraser Valley scored twice in the second to steal the win.
Jake Mulder and Mackenzie Wright gave Fraser Valley the two-goal advantage before Matthew Dyck made it 3-0 minutes into the third frame.
Hunter Floris of Vanderhoof scored the lone goal for Kootenay.
Curt Doyle of Nelson was in goal Sunday for Kootenay.
Kootenay sits last in the 11-team BC Hockey Major Midget League with a record of 2-15-1.
The Ice play host to the Vancouver Northeast Chiefs this weekend in Nelson.
