When Nelson based Watershed Productions held the premiere screenings for two recently released documentary films this past fall, Conceiving Family and Rural Transcapes, the response was “one you would only see in the Kootenays,” says Amy Bohigian, Director/Producer for both films.

The question and answer period was probably longer than the film itself. Each film resonated and people really responded.”

Bohigian worked on Conceiving Family for almost two years, so when it came time to share her personal story and that of four other same-sex couples going through the adoption process, she said, “you feel really exposed and vulnerable, but it’s all worth it when people are laughing and crying in places that you didn’t even intend.”

Another locally based story, Rural Transcapes, profiles four transgendered individuals who have chosen to live in the rural area of the Kootenays.

Christopher Moore is one of the people featured in the film and is the founder of the Trans Connect program, which provides outreach services to transgendered folks around the East and West Kootenays.

“We wanted a documentary to tell personal stories because that is what moves people beyond judgment towards curiosity and acceptance.”

Rural Transcapes will screen at 7 p.m. and Conceiving Family will screen at 8 p.m.

The Double Feature Documentary Night will be at Self Design High at 402 Victoria Street Thursday, at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $10 at the door.

A short question and answer period will follow each film.

Distribution for both films is currently underway as people from North Carolina to Haida Gwaii have sought out the DVD’s.

“These two documentaries connect with all types of people far beyond the gay, adoption and transgendered communities. They are universal. They are about being authentic and alive.”
