It’s an event that started as an idea to promote cycling in Nelson.
Sixteen years later, the Fat Tire Festival has grown into a three-day extravaganza.

Friday begins the 16th annual Nelson Fat Tire Festival.

The Fat Tire Festival begins with group rides and a kick off party at Jackson’s Hole before the event really shifts into high gear with cross country, dirt jams and trial demos at the new Rosemont Bike facility at Art Gibbon Park.

Those events begin at 10 a.m. with registration at the Rosemont Bike Park. Riders from the young age of two years old to 12 can compete.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. is the barbecue hosted by the Kootenay Lake Outdoor Skateboard Park Society.

After a brief hiatus, the scene shifts to the downtown events commencing at 5:15 p.m. with the parade beginning at Gerick’s Cycle to Sacred Ride.

At 5:45 p.m. the criterium begins for the two-year-olds, concluding with the Clunker criterium at 7:45 p.m.
Sunday the scene moves up to Morning Mountain for the downhill races.

Registration is 8 a.m. with racing beginning at 8:45 a.m.
