Day One of the 2011 West Kootenay B.C.  Senior Games and, by all accounts, the provincial event couldn’t be better.

Weather, how could that better?

The games, with organizing like this, well, once again, how could that be better?

And the competition, well in the thick of battle everyone wants to come out on top.

However, sportsmanship was at its best.

Trail and Castlegar kicked off the games competition with a host of events.

Haley Park in Warfield was a beehive of activity as track and field captured center stage.

Other events included slopitch, soccer and badminton in Castlegar, 5-Pin bowling in Trail and ice hockey in Nelson, at the NDCC Arena, and the Cominco Arena in Trail.

Thursday, action heats up in all three cities — Castlegar, Trail and Nelson — in all 20-plus events.

Dragon boat races, cribbage, bridge, cycling, table tennis and one act plays at the Capitol Theatre in Nelson.

In Trail archery, bocce, darts, five-pin bowling, golf, curling, and ice hockey at the Memorial Centre, pickle ball, swimming and tennis while Castlegar is home to horseshoes, badminton, carpet bowling, equestrian, floor curling, golf, slopitch, soccer, tennis and whist.

The 2011 West Kootenay B.C.  Senior Games concludes Saturday in Castlegar at the Sports Complex with the closing ceremonies.
