Taylor can't seal the deal at B.C. Am tourney, falls to 13th
Lauren Taylor of Nelson ballooned to an 81 on a the difficult Alberni course to finish in a tie for 13th at the 2011 B.C. Women’s Amateur Golf Championship in Port Alberni.
After cruising to a 71 during round three Thursday, the Granite Pointe golfer registered nine bogeys to drop out of contention.
However, Taylor wasn’t the only player to struggle during the final round. Only one golfer — Soo-Bin Kim of Port Coquitlam — managed to score an under-par round as B.C. Amateur Golf Officials tightened up the course.
For Taylor the final round got off to a horrible start as she registered a double-bogey six on the par 4 opening hole.
The Granite Pointe golfer shot an even-par 71 during Thursday’s third round to climb into a tie for eighth spot.
Taylor did manage to slot in a pair of birdies on holes five and nine. But the damage was already done with a three-bogey-hole-streak on six, seven and eight.
Christina Proteau of the host Port Alberni held off a late charge by Nanaimo’s Amanda Baker to with the 2011 crown with a 290 total.
Baker finished one stroke back Anica Yoo of Port Coquitlam in third.
Soo-Bin Kim finished in a two-way tie for fourth with Taylor Kim of Surrey.
Taylor has been playing very well of late after coming off a very successful season at Portland State University.
Taylor, a 19-year-old L.V. Rogers Bomber grad, won two tournaments this season on the Big Sky circuit in California — Cal State Fullerton Folino Invitational and UC Irvine Anteater Invitational — at Portland State.
Those accomplishments did not go unnoticed as Taylor earned Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year accolades — the first freshman from Portland State to claim the honour.
Taylor also was named to the All- Big Sky Conference Team. Taylor’s scoring average of 75.80 is the best ever by a PSU freshman.
She also tied a school scoring record for a 36-hole tournament with an even par 144 at the Folino.
Taylor was a two-time Big Sky Conference Golfer of the Week.
