St. Andrew’s/St. George’s Anglican Church in Trail invites one and all to enjoy a St. Andrew’s Day’s feast!
So, who was St. Andrew, and why do we connect him with Scotland? Courtesy of www.scotland.org, “Saint Andrew was one of Jesus’ twelve disciples, called the Apostles. He was the brother of Simon (a.k.a Saint Peter), and the Gospel of Matthew records that the two brothers were fishing in the Sea of Galilee when Jesus called them to become “fishers of men”. This story is beautifully portrayed in stained glass in St. Andrew’s/St. George’s Anglican Church.
Three hundred years after his death, the Roman Emperor Constantine gave the order for the Saint’s relics to be moved to Byzantium. One story has it that St Rule had brought some of those remains to Scotland, after being warned by an angel to take the Saint’s bones to “the ends of the earth.” Scotland’s patron saint is celebrated every year at the end of November with a day of feast enjoyed the world over.
St. Andrew’s and St. George’s Anglican Church in Trail invites you to a kilt-swirling, Scottish-style evening of great food and fun with family and friends. The St. Andrew’s Day Dinner will be hosted by the Anglican Church and will be held at the United Church Hall, downtown Trail on Saturday, November 27, 2010 from 5-9 pm. The evening includes a “time and talent” auction hosted by our priest, Neil Elliot, a silent auction, Scottish entertainment and a scrumptious buffet dinner catered by Geoff Tellier of the Selkirk College Food Program. Door prizes too! This is a licensed event so those 18 and under who wish to attend as guests need to be accompanied by an adult.
With the upcoming Christmas season, now is the chance to come together and visit with one another before the rush of the holiday season. All members of the community (whether church members or not) are invited to join in this event that harkens back to those wonderful community church suppers of years past. Tickets for the St. Andrew’s Day dinner are $30 each or $75 for a family and price includes door prize entry.
