A zero waste event like no other
By Timothy Schafer, The Nelson Daily
It’s a zero waste event with a definite upside.
Trash to Treasure Day (T2T) is about turning your trash, or someone else’s, into treasure and reusing what might have been thrown out.
This Saturday residents in the Regional District of Central Kootenay, including Nelson, will be depositing unwanted, but useful, household items to those who may find value in them — encouraging re-use while diverting waste from the region’s landfills.
There is another part of the zero waste equation, however. People can participate in the day by becoming treasure hunters looking for reusable items throughout the community. By participating in T2T, residents can divert reusable items from the landfill by reusing them.
The focus of the event is on reuse.
On Saturday morning, people can do the following to participate:
• Gather reusable gently-used, unwanted household items (e.g. books, bicycles, clothing, toys, furniture, etc.) and place them on your property or in your driveway.
• To make sure others know you are participating in T2T, post a sign in a highly visible location near your reusable items. Make your own T2T signs or print one from the RDCK website (http://www.rdck.bc.ca/).
• Remove all left-over items from your property by 4 p.m. the same day.
• Contact your local charity to see if they will accept your unwanted left-over items.
