Quick action by the Blewett Fire Department may have headed off a potential wildfire Tuesday evening in the 4000 Block of Blewett Road west of Nelson.

The local volunteer fire department quickly arrived on scene after receiving a call of a grass fire. The fire originated when a resident was cleaning out a burn barrel and nearby grass caught on fire.

Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue saved a boater today after engine problems led to an accident.

There are 32 wildfires burning in the Southeast Fire Centre district as of 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, according to Fire Information Officer John Boivin.

He said there were seven new fires yesterday (five of which were lightning-caused) and two new blazes today. Of the 32 fires, 20 are either under control or being held.
