Upcoming Green Drinks ponders population impacts

It's a beast of an issue, but size cannot intimidate Rossland's Sustainability Commission; next week's Green Drinks event will address challenges associated with the whopping topic of global population trends, exposing what the keynote speaker characterizes as sustainability's “sleeping elephant.”
 

The upcoming Green Drinks event is scheduled for Tuesday, April 5, 7pm at the Rock Cut Pub. It's a panel discussion on population trends and projected impact, both globally and locally.
 

Local teen breaks the mold and redefines beauty for young women

Is it based on a superficial exterior or does it delve deeper into our souls, into who we are as people, who we spend time with, how we live and how we feel about ourselves and others? One local teen, building on real life experiences and finding her own path toward beauty, has been helping other young women redefine beauty through a series of workshops.

SD8 grapples with under-funding expected in coming budget

Prepare for some belt tightening in Kootenay Lake School District No. 8 for next year.

The superintendent of schools, Jeff Jones, said the current provincial grant the school district is looking at — on a preliminary basis — isn’t as “hopeful” for next year as it could be.

He pointed to an increase in student enrollment — the second straight for SD8 — as not being reflected in the $50-million budget the school district currently deals with.

Historic hotel destroyed by fire

Fire took the one of the oldest hotels in the Boundary region last night in Beaverdell. Witnesses say that the fire was noticed at about 2 a.m. and the intense heat took the building quickly.

Although there is speculation flying around the small community, the cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Local residents in the north end of town experienced a loss of power during the blaze.

I have thought about this over the years as I postulate what might have been if I'd picked up a hammer and not a camera or learned a trade and not an art. The little perks and nuances that come with being a man's man are the only reasons I have even debated my route through life.
 
A couple of days ago I was reminded of this fading thought process as I helped someone unload a few boxes from a double parked truck.

An appeal has been filed by the Sinixt Nation’s lawyer over the Feb. 25 BC Supreme Court ruling in Vancouver that dismissed their judicial review application.

David Aaron confirmed the Sinixt petitioners filed a notice of appeal Thursday with the British Columbia Court of Appeal, regarding application made by way of petition against the Province’s issuance of a timber sale licence on Perry Ridge.

Walking the trails around Christina Lake you may see a new kind of wildlife which will surprise you – wild boars. Initially being raised at a near-by farm, the pigs are loose and on the rampage.
 
Despite all the issues being raised about the missing piggies, Brenda LaCroix, co-ordinator of the Christina Lake Stewardship Society issued a press release advising people roast pig is not on the menu for hunters.

The Nelson NDP Leadership Debate, featuring hopefuls Mike Farnworth, Adrian Dix, John Horgan, Nicholas Simons and Dana Larsen, is being held at Best Western Baker Street Inn at 153 Baker Street in the Osprey Room on Thursday,  from 7-9pm, doors at 6 pm. Written questions, chosen and posed by a mediator.
