Moths an indicator of budworm infestation in forests

Moths an indicator of budworm infestation in forests
Millions of moths infesting the forests in the Boundary region could threaten key lumber sources for the area.

The Western Spruce Budworm has made areas of the Boundary and Okanagan regions home for many years, but a current population explosion could be the largest ever seen in the area, reaching as far as the West Kootenays.

OP/ED: Tragedy a reminder that we're not bullet-proof

OP/ED: Tragedy a reminder that we're not bullet-proof

As I stood alongside search teams on the 68 Street Bridge Sunday night looking into the waters of the Kettle River for signs of a missing river rafter, I reflected on my afternoon’s float down the Granby. It was an eery reminder that what is regular fun for locals and visitors alike can so easily turn into tragedy.

In talking about the tragic death of Wade Brunelle, the search and rescue teams commented that it is fairly common to see at least one death every year, and last year there were three.

Slow fire season has potential to grow hotter

Slow fire season has potential to grow hotter

Although the hot and dry weather continues in the West Kootenay, the soaking the region took last winter and in spring has allowed it to have an almost non-existent fire season — so far.

There have been no active fires of note or fires larger than 10 hectares in the region since the 23.3 ha. fire near Golden back in May.

Overall, the Southeast Fire Centre, which includes Nelson and the Slocan Valley, has only had 67 total fires to date, the second highest total in the province — with 13 new lightning caused.

A 53-year-old Albertan motorcyclist died of injuries sustained when he lost control of his bike on a corner near the Paulson Bridge on Highway #3 yesterday.

Randall Prockiw, of Redwater, Alberta, was heading towards Castlegar on Tuesday, Aug. 9 at about 5:40 p.m. when he failed to negotiate a curve and hit the soft shoulder of the highway. Although he tried to regain control, Prockiw hit a large rock in the ditch and then made contact with the rock wall surrounding the curve.

Got to ski, but have no snow? Just "roll" with the punches

Just as stunt-based shows often start out their broadcasts with warnings not to try this at home, I feel it’s my due diligence to open this article by saying don’t do this at home and that my experience, pushing the limits on day one are not typical. Although I came back from my first roller skiing adventure, courtesy of Rossland’s Kootenay Nordic Sports, slightly thrashed and road rashed, my hopes for good times were not dashed.

Body recovered in tragic rafting accident
The body of 54-year-old Wade Brunelle was recovered this morning after a summer rafting trip turned tragic last night.

Brunelle fell from his raft into the river east of Grand Forks about 100 metres from the confluence of the Kettle and Granby rivers in deep water. He was rafting with his brother who lost sight of him and was too far away to help. Another witness saw Brunelle in the water and then lost sight of him as well.

With a target in sight of $1 million, Stephen Hill is literally hitting the pavement in Vancouver to raise the money needed to complete the purchase of the Midway mill site for Boundary Sawmills Inc. (BSI).
