'Young Visions 2011', featuring local student artists, opens at Kootenay Gallery of Art

On Thursday evening Young Visions 2011 opened at the Kootenay Gallery of Art in Castlegar and it's quite the show--an amazing and ecletic show featuring the work of dozens of distinctive young artists. As an attendee I was easily and profitably able to spend over an hour examining the hundred or more nicely-framed and mounted works on display.

Rossland Glee Club ready for inaugural gig

Nadine Tremblay - Rossland Glee Club director

Strip away the mega-star cameos, the high school love stories and slushy attacks and what you’ve got left of Glee the TV show is a bunch of everyday folks with a penchant for song and dance that, when put together with proper direction, has spawned a hit TV show and seemingly weekly appearances on the iTunes charts. Consequently the old glee club tradition is currently undergoing a revival. Rossland’s Glee club, now two years old and under the direction of Nadine Tremblay, is about to rock their first real gig this week along with the June Bugs.

For the love of water at the eighth annual Winlaw Water Festival

Winlaw WaterHeart watercolour by Peter Vogelaar.

By Phil Larstone

Water, water everywhere and plenty of drops to drink.

It’s a mantra well known in the West Kootenays, but it isn’t one that is shared throughout the rest of the world.

But if you enjoy the pure, refreshing water that happily flows from mountain to ocean, throughout our lives and into our very cells, there may be a festival waiting for you.

Magic Animals roam the Rouge this week

Magic Animals roam the Rouge this week

If you should happen to have an opportunity to visit the Rouge Gallery this week, you will be greeted by the charming and colourful Animaux Magiques, or Magic Animals, painstakingly created over many months by students at Rossland's Francophone school, L’École des Septs-Sommets. The project was lovingly executed by the grades 4, 5, and 6 split class and their art teacher, local painter Martine Bedard. The display includes six large papier maché “magical animals” constructed from chicken wire.

The Light of Rossland’s Flame

Community Building is process that requires developing authentic relationships between people in a community. The word 'authentic' is extremely important because people rarely communicate authentically.

(Somewhat) like a rolling stone...

(Somewhat) like a rolling stone...

I went to see the Rolling Stones last Monday night. In Trail! Or, rather, I went to see five guys pretending to be the Rolling Stones—an impersonator act called Satisfaction. Too young to be a real Stones fan and too old to be confident about not being mistaken for one, I found myself in an awkward position, demographically. But what can I say? I was given free tickets and where the freebies go, I am sure to follow.

Songs about Facebook abound in Cambodia

See video

The role of social networking site Facebook in facilitating protest actions has been affirmed in the Tunisia and Egypt uprisings; governments in many countries, including China, are wary of the political activities of their citizens on Facebook. But in Cambodia, Facebook is not yet considered a threat by the government.

Politicians led by Prime Minister Hun Sen (who has been in power since 1985) have created their own Facebook pages where they interact with Cambodian citizens and netizens.
