The occupy movement has been a like a powerful cleansing wind blowing over the political landscape – exposing not just the obscenely rich, and criminally irresponsible political elite, but almost every other political player too: cowardly liberals, cautious social democrats, the strangely silenced churches, social movements stuck in the past, and a moribund labour movement. Indeed, that is what is most striking about this movement: it owes nothing to anyone.

Class action lawsuit filed against CIBC mortgages on prepayment penalties

Consumers hate mortgage prepayment penalties, largely because they don’t understand them.

Now, there is about to be a high-profile challenge of how mortgage penalties are calculated.

CIBC Mortgages Inc., a subsidiary of CIBC bank, has just been named the subject of a pending class action lawsuit.

The intended suit claims that CIBC improperly calculated penalties for customers who broke their mortgages from 2005 to date.

Perhaps the first indication was the totally unexpected reaction to Jack Layton’s death. It may be that it was unexpected because so many people had become numbed by the state of the world.

One could wax on about how grim the United States (US) economy is, but Mark Carney put it succinctly:

“The (U.S.) housing market remains a mess, the consumer is weak, and government actions can be expected to reduce growth…The U.S. economy is close to stall speed…”

That sort of thing puts Canada in a quandary. When the American economy is in the toilet, the Canadian economy is usually on the rim, ready to fall in.

You may remember Henry — the ruthless industrialist who nonetheless refused to be hobbled by suicidal ideology when it came to doing business. He realized as his workers cranked thousands of new cars off the assembly line that none of those workers would likely ever own one, because he didn’t pay them enough. So he dramatically increased their wages. It was such a good idea that most industrialists followed suit and his practical approach was dubbed Fordism. It was the foundation of a high-wage economy, it lasted a very long time and it produced incredible real wealth for decades.

Saskatoon - Humboldt Member of Parliament Brad Trost announced today an investment of over $150,000 to determine the economic feasibility of developing this industry in Saskatchewan, as part of National Biotechnology Week celebrations.

Bill C-52, currently before parliament, would require Internet or phone service providers to give personal information to RCMP upon request in certain circumstances. The controversial bill, ostensibly brought forward to combat online piracy, has prompted the creation of a series of new PSA videos by Openmedia.ca.

When the U.S. invaded Iraq, riding a pack of lies and monstrous manipulation, the entire U.S. elite, including major news services, academics, and politicians from both “sides” of the spectrum, lined up to cheerlead and off they went to war. It was one of the most shameful chapters in the long history of shameful acts of U.S. imperial foreign policy.

But it actually didn’t take too long for dissenting voices to come out of the woodwork. The lies were exposed, the liars identified, the manipulation denounced.
