Tourism Rossland has reduced the operating hours of the Free Ride Ski Bus for the remainder of the ski season.  As of March 20,  the last bus leaves downtown Rossland at 6:30 pm, and the last bus from Red Mountain Resort leaves at 7:00 pm.

Nelson's Reece Hunt, Team BC capture bronze medal at Women's U18 Championship

Reece Hunt of Nelson receives player-of-game award following a semi final loss to Ontario Red at the National Women's U18 Championship Sunday in Regina.

Reece Hunt and Team BC won a bronze medal at the National Women's U18 Championship Sunday in Regina.

The Nelson Minor Hockey product and Team BC teammates defeated Ontario Blue 5-3 in the medal match.

Ontario Red defeated Team Quebec 4-1 in the Gold Medal Final.

Winning the bronze medal ties BC's best ever finish at the National Women's U18 Championship. BC previously won bronze at the 2005 edition of the tournament in Salmon Arm, BC.

Basketball kicked off a little earlier than in past years as Men’s League hoops returned to the Heritage City for the first time in decades with the arrival of the West Kootenay Men’s Basketball League.

Three Nelson teams — Empire Coffee, Kootenay Lake Electrical and Nelson Toyota — joined teams in Castlegar, Rossland, Trail and Northport, Wash., to form the eight-team league.

Here in southern BC, it is still alarmingly warm for skiers awaiting snow.  It rains, or the sun shines, and we wait, and look at a thin bit of white decorating local mountain-tops, and look askance at the thermometer registering over 12 degrees C. -- or whatever well-above-freezing, balmy temperature it happens to be at the moment.  

While we wait and hope, here's a story about snow and skiing that needs to be told, from further north in BC and from another year.  Avalanche Canada has sent out the following message:

Selkirk College Saints Continue With On-Ice Lessons

Selkirk College Saints rookie forward Wade Johnson battles along the boards in Friday night’s British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL) game against the Trinity Western University Spartans in Castlegar. The Saints split the weekend series with their rivals from the Lower Mainland.

The student athletes on the Selkirk College Saints have shown great promise in the opening third of the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL) season, but there is plenty to learn before the final playoff test arrives in March.

The Saints split their home weekend set with the Trinity Western University Spartans to remain atop the league standings as they build towards taking a shot at a fifth straight BCIHL championship. The Spartans took the Friday night game 4-3 and the Saints rebounded on Saturday to claim a 3-2 victory.

Despite the weather in October, we managed to get out on the water almost every day.  I had good intentions of spending lots of time in the jetsled, however it was much more comfortable in the big boat with the furnace.

Selkirk College Saints Sweep Weekend Series with Eagles

Selkirk College Saints assistant captain Matt Martin had a huge game against the Eastern Washington University Eagles on Friday night at the Castlegar & District Recreation Complex registering his first every BCIHL hat trick and pacing his team to a 6-1 victory.

If the Selkirk College Saints hope to capture a fifth straight British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL) title, they will do it with depth.

Flowing into the form that has seen the Saints become the gold standard in the league over the last few years, the Selkirk College squad beat the Eastern Washington University Eagles twice over the weekend to extend their winning streak to five games. Matt Martin led the way with a hat trick in Friday night’s 6-1 victory and Alex Milligan notched a hat trick in Saturday night’s 5-4 win to pace the Saints offence.
