Black Jack racers set the 'tracks on fire'

Last weekend, West Kootenay cross country skiers, Kolibri Drobish from Hills Nordic Ski Club, Sophie and Sabien Edney from Nelson Nordic, and Jasmine Drolet from Blackjack (Rossland) relay raced together as a team named “Kootenay Tracks on Fire,” at the 2013 BC Midget Championships in Revelstoke.

The Midget Championships are for youth between the ages of 9-12, and this year 181 kids spent an action-filled fun weekend of racing at the Mt. Macpherson XC Ski Trails.

Trail Smoke Eaters forward Brent Baltus has been named to the 2012-13 BCHL Interior Conference Second All-Star Team.

Baltus, 20, leads the Smoke Eaters in scoring this season with 24 goals and 51 points from 46 games played. The Nanaimo product also leads the Smokies in short-handed goals with two this season. In 115

career BCHL games with Trail, Nanaimo and Alberni Valley, Baltus has amassed 38 goals and 82 points, 81 of which have come in a Smoke Eaters uniform. Baltus is committed to NCAA Division I Alaska-Anchorage for the 2013-14 season.

The Rossland Pool doesn’t open for several months, but we’re already looking for qualified, certified Staff for the 2013 season.  The outdoor pool opens at the beginning of June and closes at the end of August.  The Rossland Pool offers a full range of aquatic education – including School Board Lessons, Aqua Tot, Red Cross Swim Lessons, the Bronze courses and Swim Club.

The Kootenay Wildcats lost the battle but won the war.

Despite dropping a 3-2 decision to the Pacific Ravens from Richmond, the Cats still achieved the weekend goal of grabbing at least a point to capture third spot in B.C. Female Midget AAA Hockey League Sunday at the NDCC Arena.

Kootenay, finishing the season with a 9-14-5 mark, skated to a scoreless tie Saturday against the Ravens to secure a spot in the semi final round against Okanagan Rockets of Kelowna.

West Kootenay Roller Derby’s all-star team has managed to climb to the top of the heap in Canadian Roller Derby, and they’ve done it in a remarkably quick fashion. The Kootenay Kannibelles are gearing up for some high-calibre derby at a national level tournament set to take place at West Edmonton Mall’s Ice Palace March 15 to 17.

Rossland Council's Feb. 25 meeting put a new animal bylaw in motion, heard an appeal from the museum, moved the farmers’ market back downtown, reset the Cook Ave. development, dove into a new recreation bursary program, and agreed to the possibility of a taxation increase to fund a reserve for the hospital in Trail.
