Tyler McKay concluded the Zone One West Kootenay Junior Golf circuit the way he started - with a victory.

The Birchank golfer fired a 1-under-par 107 to edge Brenan Moroney and capture the Zone One West Kootenay Junior Golf title Sunday at the Balfour Golf Club.

Five local golfers will tee it up representing the Zone One West Kootenay at the B.C. Junior Championship July 5-8 at the Rossland/Trail Country Club.

Tanner Kopan of Christina Lake, Redstone’s Kevin Bennett, Garrett Underwood of Champion Lakes and Brenan Moroney of Rossland/Trail were awarded berths in the tournament following weekend qualifying at the Redstone and Birchbank courses.

Hikers and bikers need to stay clear of avalanche zones

With the snowpack in most regions of the province still well above average, the Canadian Avalanche Centre (CAC) is cautioning backcountry users that avalanches remain a hazard.

“Until recently, temperatures have been lower than normal, which has delayed the development of a spring snowpack,” explains Karl Klassen, manager of the CAC’s public avalanche safety service. “In a normal spring our snowpack would be well settled by now, with relatively predictable avalanche problems. Instead, we’re still dealing with an early spring snowpack.”

The Kootenay Columbia Trails Society (KCTS) is up and running again, and is now in their second week of work. However, the heavy snowfall this past winter is having an effect on the opening of the trails.

 
“We’re just doing our annual inspection and maintenance of the trails as they open, which is quite a bit slower this year than previous years because of all the snow,” said Stu Spooner, who develops and manages the trails.

The countdown to the BC Seniors Games has officially begun after a torchlighting ceremony in Castlegar last night.

More than 100 people turned out to watch the torch being lit at 8 p.m. at the Castlegar Complex, after words from games organizers, Castlegar mayor Lawrence Chernoff, Nelson city councillor Deb Kozak, Trail mayor Dieter Bogs, and Kelly Mann (who offered comments on behalf of Ida Chong, Minister of Sport, Community and Cultural Development.). Mountain FM's Glen Hicks served as emcee.

Rossland/Trail’s Brenan Moroney destroyed the field en route to winning the Granite Pointe stop on the Zone One West Kootenay Junior Golf tournament Sunday in Nelson.

Moroney shot an amazing 6-under-par 66 to claim the tourney by 10 shots over Kevin Bennett of Redstone in Rossland and Champion Lakes golfer Alex Rugg.

“It started when (Brenan) holed a 4 iron from about 215 yards out on the second hole,” said Zone One coordinator Rob McKay.

Two weeks ago organizer Sharon Cooke thought the 2011 Terry Walgren Girl’s Youth Soccer Tournament may need to be postponed due to lack of interest from outside teams.

After the host association dominated the winner’s circle, Cooke and Company once again may have trouble attracting teams in future years.
