Young eyes to capture old history during this year's Golden City Days

While people, places, faces and spaces come and go as time ticks along, photos can last forever. This month, keen young eyes, and sophisticated shutters will be on the hunt to capture Rossland’s heritage in photo form for the first annual Youth Photo Contest as part of the Rossland Heritage Celebration.

Be it, a landmark, building, park, person or other, aspiring photographers from 12 to 18 years of age are invited to compete for iconic images that showcase the unique spirit of Rossland’s heritage.

Hosted by the Rossland Public Library, the first annual Rossland Heritage Celebration was launched as an effort to bring an added historical and heritage aspect to the popular Golden City Days. Featuring a host of events including an essay contest, publishing workshop and a workshop with Ron Shearear on Rossland’s Chinese history, the Youth Photo Contest offers a tangible way for the Alpine City’s younger generation to interact and carry on the Alpine City’s storied past.

"Photos are a compelling part of a community's history," said library director Katie Albright. "This contest is a chance for teenagers to tell the story of our community through this powerful medium."

The Kootenay Association for Science and Technology (KAST) and the Rossland Council for Arts and Culture have partnered up to bring you the Youth Photo Contest. Two categories (12 to 15 and 16-19) will battle it out for two professional quality Lowe Pro Sport 200 camera bags with a value of $180. Photos are to be submitted via the GLOWS (Growing Learning Opportunities with Science) Facebook page and must be posted no later than Friday August 31st.

A panel of judges featuring Rossland’s own adventure sports photography all-star Derek Frankowski, along with feted photographer Larry Doell and KAST’s Executive Director and hobby photographer Kelvin Saldern.

Winners will be announced and awards presented on the main stage of Golden City Days on Washington Street on September 8th at 3:00pm.

Eligibility: Must be between the ages of 12 and 18. Awards will be given in two categories 12 to 15 and 16 to 18. Submissions: Post your picture(s) to the GLOWS Facebook page. Search GLOWS on Facebook.
