UPDATED: Geotechnical report keeps six homes under Evacuation Order

After receiving a report from geotechnical engineers the Regional District of Central Kootenay has decided to keep six homes below the slide under evacuation order.

The RDCK made the announcement in a media release Thursday.

“The Regional District of Central Kootenay has received a report from geotechnical engineers regarding the Zwicky Road, Kaslo Landslide,” the release said.

“At this time the evacuation order for six homes below the slide remains in place.”
 
The RDCK said it will review the report and will accompany geotechnical engineers while they continue to assess the slide Friday and Saturday keep the public updated as more information becomes available.
 
“Residents are reminded that there will be a public meeting held in Kaslo on Monday April 24th at 6 p.m. to update residents on the landslide. The meeting will be held at the Kaslo Royal Canadian Legion Hall, located at 403 5th Street in Kaslo.”

Six homes at Kaslo Landslide remain in Evacuation Order

Regional District of Central Kootenay Emergency Operations Centre said in a media release late Wednesday, six homes below the Kaslo landslide remain in an evacuation order.

The surrounding properties in the evacuation order remain on evacuation alert and residents should stay vigilant and be prepared to evacuate if necessary.

“The evacuation order and alert will remain in place for at least the next week while geotechnical engineers continue to conduct further monitoring and assessment of the slide,” the release said.

The RDCK also announced a public meeting Monday (April 24th) at 6 p.m. in the Royal Canadian Legion Hall, located at 403 5th Street in Kaslo to update residents on the landslide that occurred above Zwicky Road.

Assessment of the slide is ongoing and geotechnical engineers will be onsite on Friday and Saturday.

The RDCK said residents are encouraged to assemble a 72-hour emergency grab & go kit in the event of an evacuation. Information about a 72-hour emergency kit can be found on the RDCK website.

The RDCK is asking residents to stay alert for signs of slides. More information can be found in the debris flow brochure available on the RDCK website.

To report any debris indicators or hazards, or in the event of an emergency, residents can call the 24-hour provincial Emergency Coordination Centre toll-free number at 1-800-663-3456.

The RDCK is continuing to encourage residents to sign up for the emergency alert notification system.

By signing up residents will receive a notification by text message or voice call of an emergency that could impact them. Residents can sign up and find more information on the RDCK website.

The RDCK will keep the public updated as more information becomes available.
