The BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) announced yesterday that charges have been approved against Trail RCMP Const. Steven Allan Murchie of breach of trust in connection with the duties of his office, criminal harassment, and forcible entry.

The charges involve allegations of misconduct against two individuals between January 2017 and May 2020 at or near Trail. An Information charging Murchie with these Criminal Code offences was sworn on July 3, 2020, Rossland court file no. 22787-1.

Const. Murchie’s next appearance is scheduled for September 17, 2020 in Rossland Provincial Court.

A ban on publication of the names of the targets of the alleged misconduct has been ordered by the court pursuant to section 486.5(1) of the Criminal Code.

The charges were approved by a senior Crown Counsel with no prior or current connection with the officer. The charge assessment guidelines applied by the BC Prosecution Service in reviewing all Reports to Crown Counsel are established in the BC Prosecution Service Crown Counsel Policy Manual and are available online at: www.gov.bc.ca/charge-assessment-guidelines

As this matter is now before the court the BCPS will not be releasing additional information or commenting further at this time
