A foot chase along Columbia Avenue has led to the arrest and detention of a Trail man, according to Castlegar top cop RCMP Sgt. Monty Taylor.

“A 48-year-old male is in custody after a foot pursuit with Castlegar RCMP.  On Nov. 25, 2019 a Castlegar business reported an unknown male left the store without paying for merchandise,” Taylor said, adding it all happened at just after 4 p.m..  “Castlegar RCMP attended and located a male matching the description of the suspect who fled on foot upon observing police.  Officers pursued on foot and subsequently arrested the male for theft, locating an amount of suspected methamphetamine in his possession.”

He said three officers were involved in the pursuit, and recovered the stolen property (a camera).

“For the incident, Gregory Alan Smith of Trail has been charged with Theft Under $5,000, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Failing to Comply with a Recognizance,” Taylor said, adding this is not the man’s first brush with the law.

“In addition to the Nov. 25 offences that occurred in Castlegar, Smith is currently charged with the following offences that occurred between 2018 and 2019 in the Trail area: Breach of Probation x 3, Theft Under $5,000 x 3, Mischief Under $5,000 x 2, Possession of Break and Enters Tools, Fail to Comply with a Court Order and Breaching a Recognizance.  He was brought before the Nelson Courts Nov. 27, 2019 and has been held in custody.  Smith’s next court appearance for the 14charges will be in Rossland Court Dec. 5, 2019.”
