Soleil Patterson has been demonstrating  speed and skill to earn her place at the U18 Canadian National Alpine Championships in Collingwood, Ontario, February  23 to 26.

At the most recent speed event at Kimberley Alpine Resort, Patterson racked up a win in Super-G, two silvers (one in Super-G, one in Downhill) a fourth- and a fifth-place in Downhilland Slalom respectively.    These results are remarkable when you consider that the off-season for Soleil means minimal on-snow training, and she is competing against racers who are able to spend much more time training on snow.

“Up to now my days on snow during the off season have been limited to short camps at Mount Hood, unlike many of my peers who have been able to afford trips to places such as Chile, Europe, and Colorado,”  Patterson says.  “This summer with the BC team taught me a lot about heavy lifting and how to work hard in all of my dryland.”   She has declared, “Someday I want to be on the Canadian Alpine Team and race the Cortina Downhill (in Italy).”

Soleil credits growing up in Rossland at skiing at Red with getting her started, and with teaching her “everything I know.”

With enough hard work and skill and good luck, perhaps Soleil’s name will become as familiar to us all as those of some very prominent and successful female racers from this area: Nancy Greene, Lindsay Roberts and Kerrin Lee (Gartner), to name just a few.  Having enough funding helps, too;  Soleil has a “GoFundMe” page at https://www.gofundme.com/f42hymjn so that anyone who’d like to contribute to this young Rossland skier’s best chances for success can do so.
