Scads of snow kept police busy with MVIs this past weekend, according to RCMP Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.

“On Jan. 17, at 12:26 p.m. the Trail and Greater District Detachment RCMP attended motor vehicle incident where a 35-year-old female driver of Trail lost control of her 2007 Honda Civic due to icy conditions while travelling in the 3600 block of Highway 3B, in Trail, BC.  She crossed the centerline of the road into oncoming traffic then collided into a 43-year-old female driver of Trail driving a 2003 Ford E350 van.  The 35-year-old female driver was reportedly uninjured and the 43-year-old female driver was taken to the Trail hospital as a precaution.

“On Jan. 17, at 2:01 p.m. the Trail and Greater District Detachment RCMP attended motor vehicle incident where two vehicles collided in the 100 block of Tamarac Avenue, in Fruitvale. The 21-year-old male driver of Fruitvale driving a 1993 Chevrolet truck struck a Ford F150 truck being driven by a 78-year-old male driver of Fruitvale after the Ford F150 truck pulled out unexpectedly onto the roadway. The 78-year-old male driver reported that he did not see the other vehicle due to the high snow banks on the side of the road obstructing his view before he pulled onto the road.

“On Jan. 18, at 6:30 p.m. the Trail and Greater District Detachment RCMP attended a motor vehicle incident at the corner of Main Street and Columbia Gardens Road, in Fruitvale, where a 2007 Chevrolet Equinox being driven by an 18-year-old male driver of Montrose slid through a stop sign and collided at slow speeds into 2006 Honda Civic being driven by a 43-year-old male of Fruitvale. The 18-year-old male driver of the Equinox attempted to stop his vehicle; however, could not due to the icy road conditions. Neither driver sustained injuries and there was minor damage to both vehicles.

“On Jan. 18, at 7:08 p.m. the Trail and Greater District Detachment RCMP attended a motor vehicle incident in the 5200 block of Hwy 22 (near the Birchbank Golf Course) where a 63-year-old male driver of Castlegar lost control of his 2004 Ford Ranger when it began fishtailing, crossed into the oncoming lane, and ended up in the snowy ditch on the side of the highway. The Ford Ranger had been in two-wheel drive at the time the driver lost control on the icy road service.

“The RCMP recommend the use of four-wheel drive and placing weight (sandbags) into the back of light vehicles in current winter conditions to help maintain control of your vehicle.

“On Jan. 19, at 2:45 p.m. the Trail and Greater District Detachment RCMP attended a motor vehicle incident on Hwy 22 near Genelle , where a 66-year-old male driver of Castlegar lost control of his 2010 Toyota Tacoma after it began sliding on the icy road surface into the ditch on the side of the highway. The vehicle was towed from the ditch and did not sustain any damage.”
