Come celebrate Earth Day in Rossland! The public is invited to participate in free, family oriented activities organized by local community groups and co-ordinated by the Sustainability Commission. Earth Day Celebrations on Saturday, April 22nd will once again feature the annual Rossland Real Food Chicken and Compost Crawl, the first outdoor Rossland Mountain Market of the season, the SPCA bottle drive, and the RDKB’s Trash to Treasure Day.

The Rossland Museum and Discovery Centre will have Species-at-Risk mini museums set up in the activity room at the Library from April 11-13th.  And at 3 pm on Thursday April 20th, kids can drop into the Library and plant some seeds with librarian Gill Eames.

Put on your walking shoes and drop in on some backyard farmers on Earth Day between 9am – 12 noon.   You’ll see chicken coops, duck coops, electric fencing, pallet composters, worm bins, and a few goats and geese.

“Most people are familiar with the classic Rossland pallet composter made of 4 wood pallets nailed or tied together,” explains Ann Damude, “And Crawlers will see lots of very effective 2 and 3 bin pallet composters as they tour backyards.  But this year, the Crawl also features an indoor worm composter, a hugelkkultur mound and an amazing critterproof composter made of stone and cement.”

Chicken & Compost Crawl pamphlets and maps can be picked up at the Rossland Library or downloaded here http://ow.ly/yjaA30aIkGT

New to this year’s Earth Day Celebrations is ‘Plant a Tree on Earth Day’.  For a donation of just $1, people can purchase a larch, pine, or spruce seedling to plant in their yard.  Proceeds will help purchase bee-friendly shrubs for the Rossland community garden.  Seedlings will be on sale between 9am – 12 noon at the Rossland Library.

The Rossland Society for Environmental Action (RSEA) and the Rossland Streamkeepers will also be giving educational tours of the wetland restoration project between 9 am- 12 pm at North Jubilee Park.

“Celebrating Earth Day helps us recognize the importance of our natural environment and gives the whole community an opportunity to give back to the planet.” said Sustainability Commission Chair Tara Howse. “The North Jubilee Wetland and the Plant a Tree initiative are great examples of citizen led initiatives that make our community and the earth a better place.”
