Find Out More About Rossland's Facinating, Action-packed Past on June 9.

Have you ever wondered about Rossland history? Unlike what too many of us older people didn’t enjoy in school, Rossland history is lively and fascinating. A gold-mining boom-town whose population and building construction exploded between 1895 and 1900, Rossland attracted the riches needed for hard-rock mining and produced a large quantity of high-grade gold ore. Rossland was dubbed “the Golden City” internationally. Times were fast-paced, action-packed and rowdy.
In 1897, Rossland was the fourth-largest city in BC, with a population of about 7,000. Now, well over a hundred years later, Rossland’s city-scape has changed a great deal — but many heritage buildings remain, and each has a story.
Jackie Drysdale is Rossland’s heritage champion. She chairs the City’s Heritage Commission and has a wealth of knowledge to share about the stories behind the heritage buildings and sites in Rossland. She knows from experience that many visitors to Rossland are intrigued by those stories, and wants to share more of them with everyone — and especially with those who regularly interact with the public, with visitors and new residents, so that Rossland’s stories can be shared more widely.
Visitors and new residents who learn about the stories of Rossland’s history generally and heritage buildings in particular are more likely to develop a stronger feeling of connection with our small city, to return, and to tell others about it. Knowledge builds interest.
Jackie will be presenting some slices of downtown Rossland’s past life during those boom years on June 9, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, at the Rossland Legion — 2081 Washington Street. Admission by donation.
