Facebook, universally-designed schools and the persistance of pickleball...all this week!
The Recreation Department is now on Facebook! Check out “Rossland Recreation” for program updates, pictures, videos, questions, answers, brochures, contests etc. If you’re between 13-18 years, “like” us on Facebook and your name will be entered into a contest to win a $50.00 Gift Card from “The Source”. Contest ends February 29!
Morning ZUMBA will be changing to a 7:00am start on Mondays and Thursdays, starting Thursday, February 16. The class will run from 7:00-8:00am and help you get an early, healthy start to your day! Classes run in the Miners Hall and are $7.00 drop in for those younger than 55 and $6.00 drop in for those older than 55 years. The early morning classes will run until March 8th if there is enough interest to continue the 7:00am class. Evening ZUMBA will continue on Mondays and Thursdays from 6:00-7:00pm. If you would like to be on the Instructor’s email list, in order to receive updates about schedule changes, please email Amber, at email@example.com.
There are some changes to the Public Skating schedule for this week, due to a major tournament over the weekend. Public Skating for the week of February 13-19 will be Wednesday, February 15 from 6:30-7:45pm and on Friday, February 17 from 5:00-6:30pm. On Sunday, February 19, Public Skating is from 6:00-7:30pm.
The Visions for Small Schools (VSS) and NOL Committees are hosting an information session on “The Universally Designed School” on Thursday, February 16, from 7:00-7:45pm in the RSS Library. Everyone is welcome to come and hear Patrick Kinghorn speak about what neuroscience is teaching us about how we learn and the move away from a one-size-fits-all solution, towards a flexible customizable approach to learning that can be adjusted for individual needs, including students with learning disabilities. The presentation will feature how tools such as iPads, adaptive applications and classroom presentation techniques are being implemented in today’s classrooms to bridge gaps for all students.
If you have a youth in the house who would like to play soccer this Spring, don’t delay registering them with Kootenay South Soccer. Early bird registration deadline is February 29, 2012 with the closing date for registration on March 16, 2012. Log on to www.kootenaysouthsoccer.com to register.
Spring Break is still a few weeks away, but if you’re looking for something for the kids to do over the break – Shelley Painter will be running some March Break Art Classes! Running Monday to Friday, March 12 to March 16 and then again from March 19 to 23, these two hour long classes run from 2:00-4:00pm. Each day will be a different project and some days will explore more than one project, using a specific technique. Participants can come to one class or all the classes – whichever works best for your child’s schedule. Suggested ages are 6 to 12 years, but 3-5 year olds are welcome to come with a parent or babysitter, for the first hour only. Please contact our department for more information about pricing and specific projects.
The Recreation Department has purchased PickleBall equipment and will be scheduling the sport into one of our available gymnasiums within the next few weeks. PickleBall is North America’s fastest growing sport and is particularly popular amongst Seniors! The sport is a combination of tennis and ping pong with a much smaller playing and travelling area. If you’re interested in playing PickleBall, please contact our office to be put on the interest list. Once we have a time, place and Coordinator organized, we’ll contact everyone who has expressed an interest.
The PAC at RSS has purchased a beverage container recycling bin for donations of CLEAN beverage containers. The bin is located in the parking lot at the back of the school, against the gym wall. The bin will have signage donated by Interior Signs in Trail, in the next few weeks, so that everyone is aware that they can drop recyclables off, in the bin. The monies earned from donated cans and bottles will go towards assisting the RSS sports teams and school clubs with travel and competition expenses and purchasing new equipment for the school.
Sr.’s Duffer Hockey on Tuesday morningsruns from 9:30-10:45am each week. This is a great program for enthusiastic Seniors who would like to learn how to play hockey or already know and want to get out and play.
If you enjoy backcountry and cross-country skiing at the Nancy Greene summit, stop by the Recreation Department to pick up a topographic map of the area, complete with locations of all the cabins.
