City issues reminder about Burning Bylaw

People burn stuff illegally. Smoke billows up and drifts around the nieghbourhood, and other people complain– especially people with asthma and other respiratory conditions. Smoke isn’t good for anyone, but some of us suffer more immediate ill effects than most.
Earlier this spring, a number of illegal fires were burning yard waste on some residents’ properties — burning yard waste is prohibited by Rossland’s burning bylaw. (Burning many other substances, such as plastics, rubber, and some construction waste materials, produces toxic fumes and is prohibited by Provincial legislation.) The City fielded complaints and has issued this reminder:

In response to many complaints regarding burning, this is a reminder to all residents of the rules about burning. Please refer to:
“The City of Rossland Burning Bylaw #2383”
BEFORE BURNING OF ANY KIND, PLEASE CHECK WITH THE CITY OR FIRE DEPARTMENT TO SEE IF THERE IS A FIRE BAN.

Some key points to note are: for any outdoor burning, a City permit is required. Burning yard waste is prohibited at all times. Illegal burning can incur a fine of up to $2,000.
