Calling All Local Sculptors -- Design a New Public Sculpture for Rossland

The Rossland Council for Arts and Culture wants to commission a new sculpture to be installed in front of the newly renovated Miners Union Hall, and has issued a call for submissions to all local artists.
Public sculptures have been a popular feature of downtown Columbia Avenue since 2008. RCAC has already commissioned and installed two: The Storytellers outside the Public Library, and Two Bears Playing outside the Post Office. The Spirit of Red Social Club Society funded and installed the statue of Olaus Jeldness at the corner of Columbia and Washington.
RCAC has partnered with Castlegar’s “Sculpture Walk” for one-year leases of sculptures; the first of these, Rusty the Horse, was so popular that a community funding campaign enabled Rusty’s purchase, and now he lives permanently on Columbia Avenue. There are two other sculptures currently on lease in Rossland: Sphere of Influence, beside Revolution Bike Shop, and V-Formation in the courtyard beside Mountain Nugget.
RCAC President Renate Fleming says, “We are looking for a local artist who can create a work of art that preserves an aspect of Rossland’s rich heritage and culture.”
The closing date for receipt of submissions is January 15, 2017. RCAC hopes to install the new sculpture in the fall of 2018.
