$1 MILLION IN SOCIAL CBT GRANTS ANNOUNCED

A trio of organizations in Nelson were a few of the 29 projects across the Basin to receive funding through Columbia Basin Trust’s Social Grants.

Early childhood support, community outreach and food security are some of the themes that stand out in the latest list of social sector projects.

The Nelson organizations include Nelson Food Cupboard Society and Nelson Women's Centre.

Salmo Community Christmas Dinner set of Sunday

Each year, volunteers from Salmo and Ymir host a free Christmas dinner to bring together members of their two communities.

Organized by Salmo resident Mavis Stachurski, the Salmo-Ymir Christmas Dinner is a special gathering that community members look forward to all year. Columbia Power  is a sponsor of the event, which takes place on Sunday, December 11 at the Salmo Valley and Community Youth Centre.

Busker Freddie B sings for KidSport Nelson

KidSport Nelson recently received an injection of funds compliments of Baker Street Busker Fred Brown.

Brown, who also coaches the L.V. Rogers Junior Boy's Basketball team, has been busking at the corner of Ward and Baker on-and-off during the summer on behalf of KidSport Nelson.

All the money raised through the KidSportTM Nelson Fund benefits children throughout the Heritage City region by helping to remove the financial obstacles that prevent some children from participating in sport.

This one day event offers thirty local vendors selling hand-crafted artisanal products from clothing to body care, jewellery to preserves, and much more.

Air Cadet Chiara Minchin from the Nelson Air Cadets received her certificate for completing the Level 1 “Boot Camp” that was held recently at the Kembel Armories in Trail.
 
The “Boot Camp” was an introduction for cadets from around the Kootenays to learn about the basics of Drill, Uniform Care and Marksmanship with other cadets.

In a bid to turn tardiness into tastiness, the Nelson Public Library had declared that all fines for overdue items collected on Monday, December 12 will be donated to the Nelson Food Cupboard.
 
Late book-returners are invited to wait until that date to pay up and benefit the Food Cupboard; penalties for lost or damaged items are not included.

The L.V. Rogers High School’s Amnesty group will be hosting a Harry Potter Gala to raise money for the UN Refugee Agency on (Saturday) December 10th at the Civic Theatre in Nelson.

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) protects the rights and well-being of refugees all over the world.

  Nelson Library seeks public input on Strategic Plan

Thanks to a tremendous response to the Nelson Public Library’s recent survey, a draft of the Library’s new 5-Year Strategic Plan has been prepared. As a next step to this important process, the Library is now seeking input on the draft.
 
“Nearly 900 people answered our survey, including a special survey for teens,” said Chief Librarian June Stockdale. “Now, we’re hoping to see strong community engagement in reviewing our draft Strategic Plan.”
